🌿 OUR LEATHERS
Materials with history, character, and authenticity
At Bohonito, we believe that great design begins with excellent raw materials.
That is why we carefully select the leathers we work with, prioritizing quality, durability, and respect for traditional processes. All our pieces are crafted using leather that is a by-product of the food industry—mainly bovine—giving value to a natural material that, when treated properly, can last for generations.
We firmly refuse to use exotic skins or leathers from animals slaughtered solely for their hides.
Furthermore, we partner with suppliers committed to responsible practices and tanning processes that are increasingly eco-friendly, aligning perfectly with our philosophy of conscious production and Slow Fashion.
Every leather has its own texture, feel, and personality. And that is precisely where its beauty lies.
✨ Types of Leather We Use
1. Premium Responsibly Sourced Leather
A large portion of our leathers comes from suppliers specializing in more sustainable and environmentally friendly tanning processes.
Among them is Nativo Piel, a company certified by the international organization Leather Working Group, which assesses environmental compliance and performance within the leather industry.
We especially love working with ultra-soft nappa leathers with a natural drape, velvety suede, metallic finishes, and printed hair-on hides—selected both for their premium quality and aesthetic character.
This blend of innovation, tradition, and material availability allows us to develop unique pieces and carefully curated, limited-edition collections.
2. Vegetable-Tanned · Natural "Vaquetilla" Leather
Natural vaquetilla (saddle leather) is one of our absolute favorite materials to work with.
It is a vegetable-tanned leather, crafted through traditional processes that use natural tannins, significantly reducing environmental impact compared to harsher tanning methods.
We primarily source our vaquetilla from high-quality, reputable Spanish tanneries.
It is a resilient, living leather with an incredible capacity for transformation. It lends itself beautifully to hand-engraving, embossing, and artisanal finishes, ensuring that each piece evolves uniquely with time and daily use.
With exposure to light and touch, the leather develops a natural patina, aging to reveal that authentic, vintage character that we value so deeply at Bohonito.
Many of our handles, zipper pulls, crossbody straps, and custom details are crafted from natural vaquetilla.
3. Oiled Leathers and Pull-Up Effect
We also work with oiled cowhide leathers, renowned for their strength, flexibility, and natural aging process.
This type of leather develops the beautiful "Pull-Up" effect, where subtle shade variations appear when the leather is bent or handled, adding depth, texture, and personality to every single piece.
While they may easily show temporary marks or scratches, these are part of the material's organic beauty and typically blend back in with regular use and the natural movement of the leather.
We mainly use Spanish-sourced leathers—particularly from tanneries in Lorca and Villarramiel—selected for structured bags, crossbody bags, and pieces requiring higher durability.
These are leathers that age with true authenticity, honestly reflecting the passage of time.
4. Upcycled Leather and Material Reclamation
At Bohonito, we also believe in giving a second life to materials that still have so much to offer.
For this reason, we rescue and upcycle small batches and surplus leather primarily from the footwear and leather goods industries, transforming them into new handcrafted details and accessories.
This reclaimed leather is often featured in earrings, embellishments, decorative elements, and small accessories, where creative material optimization truly shines.
In addition to reducing waste, this process allows us to work with unique combinations of colors, textures, and finishes that, in many cases, will never be produced again.
We view upcycling as a natural way to create more consciously and responsibly.
🌞 The Beauty of the Natural
Because we work with natural materials and artisanal processes, each piece may display slight variations in tone, texture, or natural markings unique to the hide.
For us, these small differences are not flaws; they are proof of authenticity and the unique character of each creation.
We believe in objects that age beautifully, evolve over time, and accompany real-life stories.
